Curriculum
Overview
Summer Film Studio offers a hands-on and age-appropriate tutorial using grown-up
digital technologies. Students will use a professional digital video camera with
synchronous sound and edit on a Final Cut Pro computer system. They will explore
the audio aspect of film production, including music, voice-over, sound effects
and dialogue. Students will learn by doing scriptwriting and storyboards. They will
view film clips that demonstrate quality camera, editing and narrative techniques
by contemporary studio and independent filmmakers.
The curriculum is hands on and also theoretical. Hands on because we learn by doing.
Theoretical because we intend to tap the profound desires of our students to create
productions that move the audience artistically.
Week One: The Single Shot Film
Students will unfold a story with beginning, middle and end using a well composed
single shot. Students will devise and direct their own script. Studio participants
will rotate crew positions to assist each other in filmmaking. Completed film will
be approximately 1-2 minutes long.
Week Two: Exploration of Simple Editing Techniques
Students working as a team will refine a story line as a composition of edits that
shows a continuous narrative progression. Students will shoot and compose various
shots that will unfold a continuous story arc. Different types of cuts that appear
seamless to the audience be explored. Completed film will be approximately 2-3 minutes
long.
Advanced Course: Longer Film
The advanced team builds on the techniques from the regular curriculum. Prerequisites:
either completion of the basic course or permission from AnOvation Group LLC. Completed
film will be approximately 6-8 minutes long.
